The YouTube Ads User Manual
One job: put our video in front of the exact people about to buy — and nobody else. Built for the peptide first. The lingo, the switches, the scene. No fluff.
You are not "advertising to everyone and hoping." You are handing Google a fingerprint of one exact person, and Google — which already tracks what every human searches, watches, and installs — goes and finds only those humans and drops your video on them. This manual is how you draw that fingerprint.
1The Lingo (so nothing on the screen confuses you)
Segment / AudienceA bucket of people. You pick which bucket sees the ad.
AffinityWHO they are — long-term lifestyle (e.g. "health & fitness buffs"). Broad. Personality.
In-marketWHO'S SHOPPING NOW — actively researching a category this week. Intent, live.
Custom SegmentTHE LASER. You build the person yourself from their real Google searches, the sites they visit, and the apps they use. This is the whole game.
PlacementThe sniper. You name the exact YouTube videos/channels to run ON — sit next to the content they already watch.
Detailed demographicsLife facts: homeowner, income tier, life events (new job, moved).
Optimized targetingGoogle's AI expanding past your list to find lookalikes. Great for SCALING, bad for staying laser. Off at first.
tCPA"Target cost per action" — you tell Google the max you'll pay per lead and it optimizes to it.
In-stream / In-feedIn-stream = plays before/inside a video. In-feed = shows as a suggested video next to what they watch.
2The Fingerprint — build the Custom Segment (this IS the targeting)
In Google Ads: Tools → Audience Manager → Custom Segments → New. Name it "Muscle-Keeper — Weight Loss". You feed it three things. Paste these in.
A) People who searched ANY of these on Google (symptoms & goals — this is how they talk):
lose weight keep musclelosing muscle while losing weight
skinny fat over 40how to keep muscle in a calorie deficit
protein to keep muscle over 50flabby after weight loss
best supplement to preserve muscle dietingsarcopenia prevention
saggy skin after weight losskeep muscle while cutting
muscle wasting weight losslook older after losing weight
B) Websites they live on (paste the URLs):
reddit.com/r/Ozempicreddit.com/r/Mounjaro
reddit.com/r/loseitexamine.com
myfitnesspal.comt-nation.com
goodrx.com
C) Apps they use:
MyFitnessPalLose It!WeightWatchers
NoomZero — FastingFitbod
The killer move: also feed a competitor's login or cart URL (e.g. accounts.[competitor].com). That quietly catches people actively using a rival — real buyers, mid-decision.
3The Sniper — Placements (run ON the content they watch)
Separate from the segment, you can paste exact YouTube videos to advertise on. Search YouTube for these, grab the URLs of the biggest ones, and paste them into the campaign's Placements:
- "muscle loss while losing weight" · "how to keep muscle on Ozempic" · "protein over 50 weight loss"
- "skinny fat transformation" · "Ozempic face" · "loose skin after weight loss"
- Channels: big fitness-over-40 creators, weight-loss journey vloggers, the GLP-1 review channels.
Your ad literally plays next to the exact video your buyer is watching. That's the "in front of people who will buy."
4The Setup — every switch, in order
- New Campaign → objective "Leads."
- Campaign type: Video. (Video gives you the placement + URL control you need.)
- Bidding: Maximize Conversions. Leave a Target CPA off for the first ~2 weeks so Google can learn, then set it.
- Networks — UNCHECK these: ✗ Video partners on Display, ✗ TV screens. Keep only YouTube. (Stops your budget leaking onto junk apps/TVs.)
- Locations: your area/country, and set it to "Presence" (people physically there) — NOT "presence or interest."
- Audience: add your Muscle-Keeper Custom Segment. One segment, one ad group. Don't fragment.
- Demographics: Age 40–65, all genders, and if the income switch is available, exclude the bottom 50%.
- Placements: paste the YouTube video/channel URLs from Section 3.
- Optimized targeting: OFF at the start (stay laser). Flip it ON only once it's converting, to scale.
- Ad format: Skippable in-stream + In-feed. Add your video, a headline, and a call-to-action button.
5Catching the Call / Lead
- Point the ad at a simple landing page (not the homepage) with one job: a big click-to-call button and a short form (name, phone, "what's your goal").
- Turn on Call reporting in Google Ads (Tools → Conversions → phone calls) so a call that lasts 60+ seconds counts as a conversion — that's what Google then optimizes toward.
- The form pre-qualifies so you only talk to real ones. You (or whoever) close on the phone — that's where the sale happens.
6The Budget — small on purpose
This method works CHEAP because the targeting is tiny and precise. Start at $30–$40/day. You are paying for a handful of exactly-right people, not a flood. Let it run 10–14 days untouched — the algorithm needs to learn; poking it resets the clock. Watch one number: are calls/leads coming in, and are they the right people? If yes, nudge budget up. If the calls are junk, tighten the segment (cut the broadest search terms), don't spend more.
7The Scene — what the video actually is
Short (15–45 sec), you-to-camera or clean b-roll, direct:
"Losing weight — but watching your muscle, your strength, and your face go right along with it? There's a clean, natural way to hold onto what you're working so hard to keep. Tap below and let's talk — I'll walk you through it, no pressure."
Speak to the fear (looking older / skinny-fat / weak), promise a conversation (not a hard sell), CTA = the call. First 5 seconds must name their exact problem or they skip.
